What is Andropause?

Previously called “Male Menopause” and now also referred to as “Low-T”, Andropause is the condition in men characterized by having lower Testosterone levels usually peak in the late teens and early twenties. There is a slow decline thereafter, which begins to accelerate around age 35, and at age 40 men may begin developing symptoms of Andropause, including:

  • Low libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Decreased intensity of orgasm
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Muscle loss
  • Diminished strength
  • Loss of drive and competitive edge
  • Loss of sense of well being
  • Loss of interest
  • Hair loss
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Memory loss
  • Decreased concentration
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Low energy
  • Gynecomastia (man boobs)

Approximately 40% of men over age 45 have symptoms. Younger men may also develop symptoms and have low testosterone levels. When this happens it is called Hypogonadism (click the link for more information). And there is research that suggests that testosterone levels are decreasing for men worldwide at earlier ages, though the cause is unknown.

In addition to symptoms, there are known conditions that are associated with low testosterone levels.

  • Osteoporosis (bone loss)
  • Sarcopenia (muscle loss)
  • Obesity
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
  • Premature CAD
  • Heart Failure
  • Increased CAD mortality
  • Increased Cancer mortality
  • Increased all-cause mortality

You can draw the conclusion that if you are experiencing symptoms of Andropause then you are at increased risk for the above listed health conditions.

Treatment with Testosterone replacement has been shown to improve both symptoms and reduce the risk of these serious health conditions.

At St. Petersburg Health & Wellness we treat Andropause symptoms and associated health risks with Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) – Bioidentical Testosterone. In addition, we treat diseases listed above with BHRT also when Testosterone levels are low.
